The IFRF utilizes movable block swirl
generators in order to allow for accurate and continuous variation of the inlet swirl. The
block mechanism for the 500 Nm3/h is shown below.
These swirl generators create flows which
can be characterized by an almost constant tangential velocity profile across the inlet
duct. Important properties of the inlet swirling flow which have to be characterized are
the degree of initial swirl imparted to the flow and the inlet turbulence level. The
degree of swirl is characterized by the swirl number defined as:

where W and U stand for tangential
and axial velocities, p is the density of the combustion air while Ro (Do/2) is the radius
of the combustion air duct . The movable block swirler allows the inlet swirl to be varied
from zero to high swirl without changing, the type of inlet vortex. The swirler generates
vortices of relatively low levels of isotropic turbulence with the axial fluctuations
being of the same order as tangential fluctuations.
