The IFRF provides experimental natural gas
burners for testing NOx, emissions reduction strategies. A generic swirl-stabilized
natural gas burner has been designed on the basis of studies on fluid mechanics of
swirling flows and flames. The experimental burner is very flexible. Firstly, the burner
geometry is simple with flame stability provided through appropriate combination of swirl
and bluff-body effects rather than through complex flame stabilizers. Secondly, the burner
design incorporates options for easy and continuous variation of inlet swirl and the
possibilities of handling ambient and pre-heated combustion air. Thirdly, options for fuel
staging and flue gas recirculation, as two effective methods of NOx, reduction with
natural gas, are provided. The experimental burner is normally supplied integrated with
the IFRF movable block swirl
generator.
