The Hubbard probe may be used to determine the boundaries of the flow
pattern in the first part of a flame. The method consists of measuring the pressure
difference AP between the front (dynamic) and the back (wake) of a tube. The probe is
moved laterally in the furnace and only the sign of AP is of interest: The pressure
difference is positive in the forward jet flow, negative in the recirculation zone and its
time average equals zero at the boundaries. This type of probe can also be used as an
anubar. Each hubbard probe is supplied with a custom calibration curve.
