TOTeM20: Status of Computer Fluid Dynamics as a tool for Combustion Engineering

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is now-a-days regarded as an indispensable tool for the analysis of heat and flow related problems.

In practically all branches of engineering CFD is used for product development as well as for the design and optimisation of processes and equipment. CFD provides simulations that can be used for evaluation, critical examination and optimisation during the complete design process. It is particularly suitable to simulate new, ‘thought’ processes and experiments, all at much lower costs and shorter time than is possible by conventional trial-and-error methods and laboratory or pilot experiments.

Although the use of CFD is becoming more and more popular, extreme care must be taken to assess accurately the results of the predictions.

A particular objective of TOTeM20 will be to determine what developments have there been since 1998. Here we should recall Prof. Fred Lockwood’s TOTeM12 – Application of Mathematical Modelling to Full Scale Industrial Processes – Status and need for Sub-Models – Guernsey October 1998 the results of which are published at: http://www.trends.ifrf.net/totems/totem12/index.html
