Explosion hazards are associated with many
industrial operations. Facilities have been developed at Cardiff to allow quantification
of single and two-phase (mist) hydrocarbon explosive phenomena for model validation. A
novel optical aerosol cloud-chamber combustor
has been commissioned which facilitates the quantification of flame propagation through
aerosol and vapour fuel mixtures, as well as the study of water sprays. Validation studies
of explosion models can be undertaken in field-trial scale facilities. Areas of interest
recently investigated include mitigation of explosions utilising water and characterising
and quantifying the combustion hazard posed from pressurised atomisation of
high-flashpoint liquid fuels.
